Ducted fan MAV Prototype @ Indian Institute of Sciencesv(IISc), Bangalore

First of all thanks to Aerospace Engineering Dept, IISc. The project was under progress and is in part sponsorship by Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India. I am thankful to Dr. D. Ghose, Mr. K. N. Krishnanand, Mr. Sharschandra, Mr. Hasan.

19th Jul, 2006: Ducted Fan Proto I: Robotic Aerial Vehicle @ IISc, Bangalore

Ducted Fan Flyer - a MAV under development at IISc, Bangalore
In the extension of mobile robots to three dimension, aerial robots have got a increased attention in recent years and the research on this is something rare in our countries like Nepal, India, etc.

In this respect, the work on MAV is under progress in particular Ducted-fan flyer and Quadrotor concept and i am glad and feel lucky to be a part of the this project under Prof. D. Ghose of Indian Institute of Sciences, Bangalore where I was present for my summer internship (May 8 - July 19, 2006).

The ducted-fan flyer concept consists of a single multi-blade propeller enclosed within a shroud or duct that acts as the main structure of the vehicle; the spinning propeller sucks air into the shroud producing an upward lift. The shroud guides the air vertically down onto a series of airfoil shaped fixed angle stators, which in turn generate lift-forces perpendicular to the propeller turning-axis. The moments generated by these forces provide the anti-torque that is needed to arrest the roll moment of the body (conventional helicopter uses a tail rotor to achieve the same purpose). As the rotor starts spinning at high speed, hovering is achieved as the lift generated by rotor exactly balances the weight of the vehicle. At this instant, if the outlet air is deviated from exact vertical, the vehicle should start cruising.

22nd Dec, 2006: MAV Prototype-2 @ AE, IISc

This date was of great importance as the we (myself, Krishna, Hasan, and Sharsch) made ever first hover into our lab, the Mobile Robotics Laboratory (MRL); Guided, Control, Decisions, and Systems Laboratory (GCDSL); Aerospace Department (AE), Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc).
We were overjoyed in sharing our achievement with our Prof., D. Ghose, who has granted us this project, but he was out of station. I am thankful to you for providing this wonderful environment that made it a success. We took few snaps and videos as for record of that. In the first, you can see the MAV and in the second pic you can see it hovering, and its quite stable, no roll moment at all. Had we not provided the strings, it would have flown-off; and coz we haven't been able to achieve stability completely, it would have ruined our work. The test bench though verry simple was preety much helpful. What all, we need to work on now is stability and electronics control. Unlike the earlier one, we built MAV without duct, still using stators for anti-roll mechanism. We had taken this decision because, we could not get the AXI brushless dc motor from Singapore. So, instead, we though to go ahead for time being without duct, which itself weighed more than 50% of the total vehicle weight in the last design. The idea of using duct was to enhance the lift and safety measures. So, we came to conclusion that if we are able to achieve hover without duct; then obviously we will achieve better control and lift using duct; given an optimised duct is used. In this new prototype, we are still using the stators. The exploration of use of duct, during my last summer-project suration has been of quite help. In this new proto, we saw that it not only provided roll-moment arrest but also stability. The total weight of the vehicle is only 36 gram. Krishna sir's help, and interaction was also a great reason for this successful achievement. With this, we fell we have completed 1st phase of our project, and we should move ahead with controls for which we will soon decide the components required and place order for those.

The experiment was successfully carried out IISc, Bangalore. We achieved the first phase of the project on aerial robot.

31st Jan, 2007: Paper ppt at CASST'07

Conference on Advances in Space and Science Technology 2007(CASST’07) was held at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore between 29th-31st January, 2007 and our paper "Ducted fan aerial flyer – an overview and roll moment control" had got selected for the international conference. I did deliver the presentation with a good appreciation and everyone were more interested when they saw the video of out MAV proto - 2.

FRONTIER - the ROBOCAR!

27.Apr.2013:
I had given a Seminar on "Mobile Robotics" with my personal experience in robocar design. Seeing the response, I chose to share it online and published "Robocar's C++ code". I am very happy to share that 32.9K reads, 75 embed views and 3889 downloads as on 27th Apr 2013. The PPT deals with basic electronics and stepper motor basics to startup with mobile robots. The use of parallel port programming for the interfacing approach is quite easier and demonstrated here.

The Success story:

In today’s design flow, hardware and system design methods are stretched to solve increasingly larger problems in order to overcome increased complexity. Due to the precise motion and easy control, Stepper Motor is being widely used by amateurs in robotics. Our study provided necessary details on how to interface stepper motor and its combinations first through Standard Parallel Port (SPP) of computer and then through microcontroller. The design process is more an iterative process, involving experience, calculation and experimentation. We have done quite a work in order to foster creativity and cut down on time spent re-researching methods of using stepper motors, mathematical relations has been derived for converting turns or positioning into discrete steps as required by Stepper Motor and thus the software equips the motor with AI.

In this design project, we accomplished our goals of implementing unique software strategieswith low cost robot platform whose movement is controlled by self developed modular C++ programme through Parallel Port to control stepper motors that drive the ROBOCAR. We illustrated our methodology that won us Best Robo Design at the Vitrubio, the Robotics contest held during Technozion’06 , the technical fest @ NIT Warangal. Later, we made further improvements and added more feature and happened to present a paper at Engineer'06, the technical fest @ NIT Surathkal, where too we won in the paper presentation.
We proposed methods to specify and refine designs from a purely software description at a functional level to a level where the hardware components are encapsulated as objects and their interfaces clearly defined. Using simple mathematical relations, we proposed a methodology after quite a few practical and theoretical experiments for the different problems faced such accurate forward and backward movements, precise angle turns, etc. We started with a simple handshaking interface and refined it to more complex functionality which will make it function like an Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) machine.

TZ'06-07 Parallel port controlled Robocar

4th Apr, 2006: Paper ppt at Engineer'06 @ NIT Surathkal

With further improvements to our robocar, myself and Yudhisther happened to present paper titled "Robot Design using Stepper Motor interfaced by PC" at Blueprint, IEEE National paper cum project presentation during ENGINEER’06 of National Institute of Technology Surathkal (1st-4th April, 2006). We received third place in the paper presentation.

I am thankful Mr. P. Murlidhar, faculty, NIT Warangal; Mr. Apoorv Goyal; Mr. Supreeth Murthy; Mr. Yudhisther Pandey; and Mr. Vrishank Raghav for their help into all this.

Thu, Mar 15, 2007: Roborace @ TZ'07

Alongside are the few of the snaps for my robo during roborace and line-follower robotics competition during the technical fest Technozion'07 at our college.

This was remote controlled roboracing competition where two robos will compete at the same time in the two arena's sideby. The robo is required to drag the ball avoiding it to fall into the pits, as well there are obstacles here and there in the way. I used stepper motor controlled by C++ program interfaced through parallel port to computer. The remote control command was sent to the program which generated required pulses to control the robo.
The line-follower robo didn't work well (in the 3rd image). I am working onto sensors and will achieve this task soon.

Invigilator

12/23/05

INVIGILATOR, as the name specifies, this project was aimed at counting the number of people entering a room, or it can be also used at the public queue applications (as railway ticket counter, etc) without need for sensor.

Though a common and simple project, I being a mere 3rd semester student, did this project, which was something worth doing for the first time for me and was very happy by this achievement. What it basically does is, senses any light obstruction at LDR, sends a pulse to counter IC, which further decodes it for 7 segment display. It can count from 00 till 99.

I am thankful to Mr. P. Murlidhar, faculty member, NIT Warangal.

Telephone Directory using QBasic
