How to hide file/folder in linux ?

Method 1:
Make a file named .hidden in the same directory where our to-be-hidden file/directory lies. In our case, we want to hide /home/friend/Desktop. So we make a file named .hidden (don't miss the dot in front of hidden) in /home/friend. Next we add the name of the file/directory to be hidden into the .hidden file, one name in each line. Since we wanted to hide only the Desktop directory, we add a single line: Desktop into it. This was the solution to my friends problem as he needed to hide a file without renaming it. However, if you have the freedom to rename the file, then below two methods will be easier than this one.

Method 2:
Just rename the file/directory and prefix the name with a ' . ' (a dot). Files starting with a ' . ' are considered to be hidden files by linux.

Method 3:
Rename the file/directory and add a ' ~ ' to the end. eg: if the file name was secretfile.mk the new name will be secretfile.mk~. Linux considers files ending in ~ as backup files and hence hides them.

Note: In some machines you need to refresh the GNOME file browser to see the effect.

Do not use above methods to protect confidential data, as the hidden files can be easily seen using View -> Show Hidden Files (Ctrl + H) in Nautilus and ls -a in a terminal.

Made my own search plugin for firefox

Steps:
1. Open the Firefox search plugins directory (/usr/lib/firefox-3.6/searchplugins/) in "su" mode.

2. Create a "mysearch.src" file e.g.:

3. If you want, to search into a particular website, use the siteserach tag. You may comment "suggestqueries" and "defaultEngine" tags if not required.

4. If you like to see a nice icon next to the search name, add a 16x16 gif file with exactly the same name in the same location where you placed the .src file.

5. That's it - Restart firefox, type Ctrl+K to reach the Firefox Search Box, choose the above engine from the drop-down list and start searching. It makes searching your favorite blogs so much simple and fast.

Forgot Linux root password.

1. Boot linux with rescue cd.
For that when shell comes, write
"linux rescue"
2. Mount the root using
"chroot /mnt/sysimage"
3. goto "/etc" and open "passwd"
4. search for item root passwd
5. Using your favorite text editor, edit the root entry of the
/etc/passwd file to remove the password, which is located between the first and second colons. Do this only if the password field does not contain an "x," in which case see below.

root:Yhgew13xs:0:0: ...

Change that to:

root::0:0: ...

If the password field contains an "x," then you must remove the
password from the /etc/shadow file, which is in a similar format.
Refer to the manual pages: "man passwd," and "man 5 shadow."

Note: Incorrectly editing any of the files in the /etc/ directory can severely screw up a system. Please keep a spare copy of any files in case you make a mistake.

Installing Fedora Core into 2nd partition

Problem: XP is installed on the first partition. Fedora is installed on the second partition(/dev/sda5). When the Fedora installation completes, is promts you to remove disk and click 'reboot'. When I reboot, It goes straight into XP. It doesn't prompt you to choose wich OS you want to use?

Solution:
1. For this particular configuration i.e. linux into 2nd partition, you should have done the following, infact this methid is advantageous in one or many other way:

Select "Use GRUB as the boot loader"
Select Install Boot Loader record on
"...First sector of boot partition".
After finishing the Red Hat installation, reboot into Linux. If you don't have a boot disk, try booting in [linux rescue mode].

2. mount root as:
> chroot /mnt/sysimage

3. Create boot record information of linux as:
#dd if=/dev/sda5 of=/fedora.bin bs=512 count=1
» because sda5 is your linux partition. This can be verified by:
>fdisk -l
Device Boot Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 3697 7 NTFS
/dev/sda2 3698 4997 f W95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/sda5 3698 4972 83 Linux
/dev/sda6 4973 4997 6 FAT32

4. Copy this file /fedora.bin to any FAT32 drive or anyother backup media.

5. Restart into windows, copy the above file into "C:\" root and add the following line to "C:\boot.ini"
C:\fedora.bin="Fedora Core"
┌───── C:\boot.ini ──────┐
[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition
(1)\WINDOWS [operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional"
c:\fedora.bin="Fedora Core 4"

**
Note:
Always install Windows first, spesially if you are new to Linux, this makes live allot easier. When it asks you where to install the boot loader, tell it to install it into the MBR, but the method above

Download ISO image of linux and burn onto a DVD.

Fedora (redhat linux) : suited for servers and experts
Ubuntu (debian linux) : suited for clients and beginners

u can go for default installation...
-------------------------------------------------
1) make around 20 GB free space (unformatted), you can do so by deleting partition.
2) In the installation steps, select default partition from "free space".
3) then follow all steps as usual.

for manual partitioning....: (step c : optional)
-------------------------------------
1) make around 20 GB free space (unformatted), you can do so by deleting partition.
2) in the installation steps, select manual paritioning...
a) make "swap partition" type of size = 2 x RAM size
b) make "ext4 partition" and select the mount location as "/"
c) usually 2 partition are sufficient. Still, if want separate partition for "home location" you can do so as well by creating 3rd partition of ext4 type and mount location as "/home"
d) then follow all steps as usual.

Proxy Server, Anonimity on Internet

The internet services provided on a shared LAN have generally blocked few sites and the connection is also limited. The problem of disconnecting and unable to open sites like orkut, etc was the reason why i started haunting about it.

The best of all time what i found is JAP / JonDo. How does it work? It creates a server on local system and creates a tunnel through the gateway to the remote server and this is how you get access to internet full freedom. It also maintains anonimity. But the only stake can be, the remote server that ultimately provides you access to internet, may misuse your informations, but this is equally the stake as per dependcy on ISP.

Just google and you will come to know about it more.
