Problem: XP is installed on the first partition. Fedora is installed on the second partition(/dev/sda5). When the Fedora installation completes, is promts you to remove disk and click 'reboot'. When I reboot, It goes straight into XP. It doesn't prompt you to choose wich OS you want to use?
Solution:
1. For this particular configuration i.e. linux into 2nd partition, you should have done the following, infact this methid is advantageous in one or many other way:
Select "Use GRUB as the boot loader"
Select Install Boot Loader record on
"...First sector of boot partition".
After finishing the Red Hat installation, reboot into Linux. If you don't have a boot disk, try booting in [linux rescue mode].
2. mount root as:
> chroot /mnt/sysimage
3. Create boot record information of linux as:
#dd if=/dev/sda5 of=/fedora.bin bs=512 count=1
» because sda5 is your linux partition. This can be verified by:
>fdisk -l
Device Boot Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 3697 7 NTFS
/dev/sda2 3698 4997 f W95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/sda5 3698 4972 83 Linux
/dev/sda6 4973 4997 6 FAT32
4. Copy this file /fedora.bin to any FAT32 drive or anyother backup media.
5. Restart into windows, copy the above file into "C:\" root and add the following line to "C:\boot.ini"
C:\fedora.bin="Fedora Core"
┌───── C:\boot.ini ──────┐
[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition

When it asks you where to install the boot loader, tell it to install it into the MBR, but the method above Download ISO image of linux and burn onto a DVD. Still, if want separate partition for "home location" you can do so as well by creating 3rd partition of ext4 type and mount location as "/home" d) then follow all steps as usual. best of luck... happy being copy-left |
